I Am - The Light of the World
Episode Summary
Jesus is the light-giving presence of God in our world. In calling Himself the light of the world, Jesus reminds us that just as there can be no physical life without the light of the sun, there can be no spiritual life without the light of Christ.
Episode Notes
READ TOGETHER:
John 8:12-30
DISCUSS:
- What is it about darkness that frightens people? Are you afraid of the dark? How does the light affect the darkness?
- What does it mean that Jesus is the light of the world? Jesus declared that He is the light of the world at the Jewish feast of tabernacles. Why did Jesus choose this moment to make this statement, and how does the setting enhance what Jesus says about himself?
- What is the difference between Jesus being the light and giving the light?
- Is Jesus really a light to the “whole” world? What does it mean to walk in darkness?
- Why did the Pharisees try to discredit Jesus’ testimony? Why is Jesus’ testimony credible to you?
- What two witnesses did Jesus claim testified on His behalf? How is Jesus’ relationship with God an example for our relationship with God?
- How did the Pharisees respond to Jesus’ words? Why didn’t anyone arrest Jesus? What does this say about God’s will?
- If Jesus is the light of the world, why do we still sometimes experience darkness in our lives? What can we do about it?
- How do you feel knowing that God is able to bring light and life to the dark places in your life and world? Is that intimidating or inviting?
